Politicians eye tech to reduce losses in Medicare, Medicaid

With the budget battle underway, the case for a strong identity credential for Medicare may be too good for Congress to pass up. Smart cards could help the federal government to reduce Medicare fraud and abuse to the tune of $370 billion in the next 10-years, says Kelli Emerick, executive director of the Secure ID Coalition.

More than ever before, Americans believe that the budget deficit is a major problem that must be addressed. This is also a consensus across party lines. A recent Gallup Poll found that 89% Republicans, 81% Democrats and 79% Independents believe it is an issue.

Sim-Prints’ biometrics app for improving patient care in the developing world won the first Idea Transform Weekend held in Cambridge, UK, reports Business Weekly.

With this mobile phone-based app, health care workers can collect and check patient information in a variety of environments. Gemalto will issue an additional 15 million second-generation German eHealth cards to AOK – the German health insurance fund – in 2012.

AOK (Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse), the Health Insurance Fund, looks after around 25 million people, approximately one-third of the population in Germany. Last year, Gemalto issued 2.5 million health cards for the German National Health Insurance Scheme.
