Smart Telecommunications Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone company, announced it is testing an NFC service that allows consumers to make contactless payments with their mobile phones.
The trial is part of the Pay-Buy-Mobile initiative of the GSM Association, a global trade group of mobile phone operators, which recently recommended
that phone manufacturers start issuing NFC-compliant phones by mid-2009.
With the new service, customers only need to hold their NFC phone near a contactless card reader to process the transaction. They will then receive a text notification for every successful transaction. Read more here.
