The Irish Council for Bioethics (ICB) has released a report titled “Biometrics: Enhancing Security or Invading Privacy?” that looks to advise on proper implementation of biometric technologies that keep in mind various privacy and data security issues surrounding it, according to a Tech Central article.
The key behind the report isn’t so much a company protecting itself, however, as much as it is advising on how to foster acceptance of the technology through proper techniques that can guarantee privacy and security of the data for the intended users as well as quash the feelings of a “Big Brother” type of organization.
Another area covered in the report includes storage where the report recommends the immediate deletion of one’s data when it is no longer needed as well as pushing encrypted storage of personal data on smart cards or other similar devices as opposed to large databases.
As an overall warning to those implementing such programs, the ICB makes a point to encourage open and transparent dialogue about the implementation with those affected by it to further assuage any fears of wrong doing with their personal data.
