What if there was a way to embed data directly into food? That’s the idea behind the NutriSmart Technology System, a food tracking system that revolves around edible RFID tags, reports Engadget.
Developed by Hannes Harms, a design engineering student at the Royal College of Art in London, the NutriSmart prototype embeds RFID tags directly within food to monitor the entire supply chain from start to finish.
With edible RFID tags, your fridge can warn when foods have passed their expiration. Shopping and cooking will be fully automated. Our ovens will read and scan our food to begin the appropriate cooking process.
Another part of the NutriSmart system is the Smart Plate, which acts as a diet management system. When an item is positioned on the plate it is read with an integrated RFID reader, which transmits nutritional information like calories and fat to the user’s mobile devices. It can also offer allergen alerts to notify users of potentially dangerous ingredients in their meals.
