Australia’s Commonwealth Bank has announced that more than 120,000 customers have downloaded its Kaching mobile banking and contactless payments app since its launch in December, according to iTWire.
Commbank did not disclose how many out of those 120,000 are using the app’s contactless payments feature, which requires iPhone users to buy an NFC-enabled iCarte protective case from Wireless Dynamics ($54.95).
For those without iPhones, Commbank is putting the final touches on an Android version of Kaching, which could potentially leverage embedded NFC chips rather than rely on an add-on device like the iCarte.
According to Drew Unsworth, general manager of online banking, the Android app should be reading for testing within the bank staff by next month.
Unsworth added that Commbank may pursue a Kaching app for Windows phones, as well as a more in-depth version for the iPad.
