CVS/pharmacy is looking to bring its ExtraCare loyalty rewards system to smart phones, according to the Chain Drug Review.
The pharmacy chain has a mobile app in the works that will allow CVS customers to store their ExtraCare card information on their smart phones, enabling them to collect and redeem rewards by presenting their phone at the point of sale.
“Customers can simply scan their ExtraCare card one time into their smart phone and store it so they don’t have to carry their card with them any more when they shop with us,” explained Judy Strauss Sansone, CVS’s senior vice president of merchandizing.
With 92 million active cardholders, CVS’s ExtraCare is the largest loyalty program in the retail world, according to CDR. As of last December, 67% of all transactions and 82% of front-end sales were made using ExtraCare cards.
“ExtraCare uniquely positions us to deliver tailored offers, rewards and information for each customer that are based on individual shopping preferences,” added Sansone. “That engagement with the customer happens everywhere the customer chooses — in our stores, at our pharmacies, at home via e-mail, mobile or digital.”
According to CDR, CVS is also pursuing an aggressive mobile strategy that includes plans for a mobile wallet.
