A new trend in the enterprise market is starting to emerge: “Bring Your Own Identity.” It’s already being used in the business-to-consumer realm under the moniker of social login, but people often don’t realize this is actually a form of BYOID and enterprises are looking to make use of these identity credentials in the future as well.

Russian hackers have gained access to 1.2 billion user names and passwords from 420,000 sites. The breaches range from small business sites to large everyday names. Many of these sites are still vulnerable as well. This may well prove to be the largest identity credential breach in history but will it change anything?

Heartbleed was a bug in OpenSSL software used on web servers worldwide. OpenSSL encrypts data sent from the server to web visitors. It includes a feature called a heartbeat, which sends some data back to the visitor’s browser to let it know the site is ready and waiting for request and the heartbeat sends the same amount of data that the browser received, like an echo. But the Heartbleed bug added a vulnerability that could enable passwords and other data could have been openly accessed and the hackers likely would have gone undetected.

“Operation Emmental” – as in swiss cheese – is a variation om a man-in-the-middle attack, that found a way around two-factor authentication tokens that are sent as text messages for users to activate banking sessions.

The FIDO Alliance standards initiative was a key topic at the Cloud Identity Summit (CIS) and the alliance conducted an interoperability session where members demonstrated how their FIDO Ready solutions could work together.
