Existing notice-and-consent paradigms of privacy have begun to fail dramatically. Privacy engineers aspire to fix this and break out of the compliance rut but it’s been a tough road. Enter User-Managed Access (UMA). UMA is an industry standard developed by the Kantara Initiative through an open community process. Through industry expert input and implementation, UMA is now a Version 1.0 Kantara Initiative Recommendation – the highest form of recognition possible in the organization.

Gemalto has deployed its Coesys eGov Authentication Server in Singapore to provide two-factor authentication and end-to-end encryption of passwords to SingPass logins; Oberthur Technologies announced that its Lasink solution has been selected by Costa Rica for a multi-year contract to provide national ID cards; Evolis is extending its range of printers designed for self-service card printing with the launch of four new models.

Daon was awarded a $1.8 million NSTIC grant to explore how senior citizens could benefit from secure digital identity. Major goals were to test the willingness of users to accept the credentials and the willingness of relying parties to move to external identity providers.

Two states have started piloting mobile driver licenses and at least five others want to explore putting the credentials on smartphones. Kentucky proposed legislation that would study the feasibility of mobile driver licenses this year but the bill died in committee. That didn’t stop legislators and other government officials from hosting a Joint Committee on Transportation hearing that discussed mobile driver licenses.

MorphoTrust’s NSTIC pilot looked at creating an electronic ID for accessing online services that would offer the same level of security, privacy protection and identity authentication as in-person transactions. The piot was with the North Carolina Department of Transportation and Health and Human Services.
