Jetstar Airways plans to use the Apple iPad for in-flight entertainment on its domestics and international flights, according to the Australian Business Traveler.
The iPads will be fitted with custom housings that feature an extended 20-hour battery and RFID chip to prevent the iPad from being stolen by any would-be thieves. A flip-stand and keyboard will allow passengers to rest the iPad on the seat’s tray table to view and listen to music, TV shows and movies, games, eBooks and magazines.
Batteries will be swapped out during the aircraft’s turn-around time, and any damaged iPad will be replaced within 48 hours thanks to a signed agreement with an Apple authorized repair company.
Specifics on the price passengers could expect to pay to rent the iPad were not included, but airline officials did say that the system will first arrive by mid-2011 on Jetstar’s fleet of Airbus A320 and A321, which currently service domestic routes as well as flights to New Zealand and Asia.
