Australian airline, Qantas, has signed a four-year deal with Unisys to provide a new RFID-enabled baggage reconciliation system to track and verify luggage at its domestic terminal in Sydney.
With the new system domestic passengers will be able to print their own bag tags prior to taking them to the bag drop area. In addition, Platinum, Gold and Silver Qantas Frequent Flyer members will be issued a Q Bag Tag, which will use RFID technology to allow a bag to be quickly identified and tracked, as well as eliminate the need for these passengers to print a new bag tag each time they fly.
Unisys has also agreed to provide system integration, implementation and rollout services as well as application hosting and support for the system at the Unisys data center in Sydney.
This system comes as part of Qantas’ Next Generation Check-in set to be released in Sydney later in 2010, and Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra in 2011.
