Cubic Transportation Systems, a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corporation, and Miami-Dade Transit have launched the agency’s new EASY Card automated fare collection system for its 22 Metrorail stations and nearly 900 buses. The new system was fully operational just 15 months after the contract was first awarded in June, 2008.
The new contactless card replaces a fare collection system that has been in place at Miami-Dade for more than 25 years. Within seven months of contract signing, the bus fare collection equipment was operating and the central computer, rail fare collection and parking management systems followed this summer. Cubic also integrated an automatic passenger counting system on the Metromover.
The EASY Card is managed by Cubic’s Nextfare Central System, the back-end administrative and revenue management system the company has fielded in 10 systems around the world.
EASY Card can be used to pay all transit fares, including transfers between bus and rail, as well as parking. The EASY Ticket, a recyclable paper smart card with an embedded contactless chip, is available for visitors.
