Denton public libraries have announced plans to install new RFID technology in an effort to speed up the check-in of returned items, while easing the workload of library staff.
According to DentonRC.com, the Texas libraries will look to 3M Library Systems for equipment including self-checkout machines and electronic RFID tags for various library items and equipment.
Utilizing RFID technology, the system will automate check-in of books, DVDs and other items, which will save staff time and allow a quicker turnaround on popular titles. Staff can focus their time more on assisting patrons with the locating of materials, boosting customer satisfaction.
The project will include self-checkout machines which allow multiple items to be scanned at once, as well as an automated book drop. The RFID system reads the tag and knows whether the item should be shelved, held for another customer or transferred to another library.
The City Council voted in December to buy the RFID equipment, replacing the primitive bar code system. Later this spring, each library is expected to close temporarily to tag all print items.
