Department for Transport completes first live mobile ticketing trial

The UK’s Department for Transport recently announced completion of its first small mobile phone ticketing trial in northwest England involving 36 passengers, two bus operators and NFC-compliant phones.
The trial’s aim was to demonstrate that NFC phones could be used to hold the transport tickets and that they could be remotely loaded and validated. It also could help bus operators generate savings, according to one consultant. Still, the limited availability of NFC-enabled handsets in the UK, as well as conflicts between mobile operators and banks in areas such as security standards, could hinder development.
