The Southern Sydney Regional Organization of Councils (SSROC) is working to outfit eight libraries in New South Wales, Australia with RFID tracking systems, a move that would require the purchase of 1.5 million tags.
The SSROC believes that implementing an RFID system complete with security gates at entrances and exits will significantly reduce incidences of theft. The system will also allow for the self check-out of materials.
The Marrickville, Randwick and Sutherland Council libraries in New South Wales have already adopted RFID systems. On deck are the Ashfield, Canada Bay, Canterbury, Waverley and Woollahra branches.
