IER, FASVER and INSIDE team up to develop IFI ™

Paris, July 10, 2003 – Inside Contactless, FASVER and IER today announced their partnership in the development of IFI, a RFID-based authentication for official documents (passports, visas, identity cards, etc.).
This innovative concept, called IFI – Intelligent Film for Identification TM, is the result of a close co-operation between the three companies: INSIDE Contactless, specialised in the development of contactless chips, FASVER, leading manufacturer of security films for the protection of official documents and IER, specialised in the integration of radio frequency identification solutions.
IFI secures documents and guarantees a very high-level of authentication. The document is secured through the combined integration of a secured film with an embedded serigraphied antenna, a radio frequency chip, and the use of radio frequency readers.
A passport developed according to the IFITM concept looks like a usual passport. Yet its embedded chip stores all of the visible printed information as well as the biometric data as recently recommended by ICAO: facial picture, fingerprint and iris.
The ultra-thin security film integrates a serigraphied antenna. Through electromagnetic coupling, it enables the storage and reading of the variable and biometric data contained in the chip. Electromagnetic coupling, a breakthrough in this application, avoids electrical connections (“bonding” or “flip-chip”) eventually guaranteeing the required life-time for official documents.
The reading of a passport with a radio-frequency reader allows for an immediate comparison between the visible data printed on the document, the data stored in the chip and the appearance of the passport-holder. Controlling the identity of a person at each check-point (customs, airports, immigration services, etc.) becomes simple.
IFITM proposes a reliable and flexible solution which can be integrated at any stage: during the manufacturing process, at the issuance, or when the passport is personalised at the remittance of a visa for instance.
It meets State and Government bodies’ expectations of a cost-effective implementation solution and reinforces the fight against fraud and counterfeiting of official documents.
Through this new radio frequency application, IER, FASVER and INSIDE Contactless demonstrate their business know-how and capacity of innovation.
