Japanese mobile service provider KDDI has chosen Gemalto to provide its User Identity Module (UIM) cards and Trusted Service Management (TSM) solution for an upcoming NFC pilot.
From May to December 2010, participants in the pilot will be able to use various types of NFC services ranging from mobile payments, transportation services, e-driver licenses, e-ticketing, as well as interacting with smart posters.
The trial will be backed by a wide-range of leading industries, including car manufacturers, airline companies, and cinema operators.
During the course of the pilot, Gemalto will be entrusted with the preparation and management of sensitive user information between KDDI and other service providers, as well as the provision of multiple mobile applications to subscribers.
According to Gemalto, Japan boasts the world’s most advanced mobile contactless market with 18% of mobile subscribers actively using mobile contactless services.
