Malaysia is issuing RFID tags to track Muslim pilgrims performing the Haj or Umrah in the Holy Land, according to bernama.com. So far tag manufacturer Senstek Sdn Bhd and Tabung Haji (TH) Travel & Services have issued 10,000 RFID tags for 5,000 Haj pilgrims this year.
The pilgrims are issued tags upon registering at the TH Complex, where all their personal information, luggage and locations are recorded. The same process is done upon their arrival in Mecca.
The system is intended to expedite the data collecting process as well as reduce cases of pilgrims losing their luggage.
Senstek, a Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) subsidiary under the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, hopes the Saudi Arabian government will accept the application for expansion into other countries over the next couple of years
