The device, which is called Mobile Biometric Device, is designed as a rugged tablet-style device designed for use in border control as it is capable of both enrollment and verification.
Additionally, NEC touts the device as being ideal for areas requiring a movable control point for border security such as outdoor land crossings, ferries, trains, buses and airports as the device can communicate wirelessly with its home base via 3G, GSM, GPRS, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS.
The biometric features on the device include an optical fingerprint reader and an embedded 2-megapixel camera for facial recognition.
