The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has deployed the facial recognition system CompletelyOnline to be utilized for its new defensive driving pilot program that takes place online. One of the reasons officials from the New York DMV have reported satisfaction with this product is due to its use of matching driver’s licenses with pictures of a face.
The driver must submit an image of the driver’s license along with the biometric sample of his face, thus proving his identity over the Internet the same
way he would be proving his identity in person.
DMV officials believe this brings authentication as close to a classroom roll-call as an online course can get. The New York State DMV expects up to 100,000 of the 650,000 taking the defensive driving course each year to opt for the online pilot course.
