New York University students will be getting a redesigned ID card starting this fall which will include contactless capabilities for access into buildings.
“The reason for issuing a new ID card is for essentially two reasons,” said a NYU spokesperson. “It has been in place for far too long (10 years), and there is a need to upgrade the card from its current mag swipe technology.”
The new cards will retain the mag swipe for spending purposes but allow the cardholder to wave the card at a reader rather than swipe the card when trying to access NYU buildings. For extra security, students will have to enter their birth date when they tap in.
