The attorneys general from the vast majority of states reached an agreement regarding enforcement actions with Target Corporation following the 2013 breach of the company’s computer system and the payment card data of 40 million customers.Target agreed to pay $18.5 million to the states, but the real story is that states are stepping up pressure on private companies to protect consumer data. This settlement and a prior New York regulation imposed on the financial industry are among the first to hold private companies liable for breaches and outline steps that must be in place to avoid penalties should a breach occur.
