A Philippines biometric national ID card is in the works to give undocumented individuals the credentials they need to obtain jobs, bank accounts and other services. For Filipinos without birth records or other legal documentation, obtaining the current national identity card is difficult, but the new biometric system will ease the path for millions.
The US$563 million program, became a reality when it was signed into law earlier this month, according to an article in the Financial Express.
The first step will be collecting data – including iris scans, fingerprints and facial images – from one million welfare beneficiaries. Next, undocumented individuals and minority ethnic people will be enrolled, with the goal of registering and assigning a permanent ID number to all 106 million Filipinos by 2022.
