A new RFID security system was deployed at this year’s July 4 Boston Pops Firework Spectacular to grant VIPs access to the Unified Command Center.
The new system was developed by a coalition comprised of RFID Global Solutions, Fenwick Technologies and Middlesex Community College in order to avoid the crowding and confusion that occurred at the entrance to the Command Center last year.
Public safety officials were issued special badges embedded with passive EPC Gen 2 tags, which were read by two scanning portals, one at the entrance and one at the exit.
The RFID system allowed for “free flow access,” according to a press release by RFID Global Solutions. The company went on to add that their RFID credentials system also reduces the need for access control security staff and eliminates the need to present identity credentials for validation.
