The lower cost of contactless smart cards is making the technology more competitive with legacy proximity cards, says Jennifer Toscano, marketing manager at Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies. Smart cards offer more security than prox and enable end users to add applications beyond access control, Toscano says.
Schlage, a division of Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies, is a supplier of multi-technology readers and cards. Toscano says customers have been expressing interest in the smart card technology for their versatility. “They enable the customer to have the most secure applications,” she says. “They look at cards for security but also what they might be doing in the future, adding applications such as cashless vending and biometrics.”
