UK Department of Transport announced that the use of smart cards for rail travel will be rolled out across the state as part of the new reforms being introduced by the government, according to thisjusthappened.com.
The new system will function much like the paperless, Oyster card ticketing system being used in London. Justine Greening, secretary of state transport, said the government were looking to make annual efficiency savings of £3.5 billion (approximately $5.47 billion) and that there would be an end to “inflation-busting fare rise”.
The transport secretary will soon be entering into consultations regarding the proposed idea of also bringing into force variable passenger fares depending on different time sections of the day with a view to discouraging travelers from making their journeys during the peak morning and evening rush hours.
