Westpac, one of Australia’s four major banks, has announced a partnership with MasterCard to pilot a new NFC payments application for Android phones.
The pilot will see Samsung Galaxy S III handsets equipped with special SIM cards containing an embedded secure element. Using a virtual Debit MasterCard stored in the secure element, pilot participants will be able to pay for items with a tap of their phone on a contactless MasterCard PayPass terminal.
According to Gizmodo, the trial will involve 100 Westpac employees making payments at various merchant partners over a period of three months.
Upon completion of the pilot, Westpac says it will use customer feedback to design and deliver a mobile payments solution for its customers.
