Mobile driver licenses are coming. One state is piloting the technology and many other states are interested but the hurdles to implementation are numerous. But the ubiquitous plastic card that resides in the wallets of most people 16 years of age and older is in for a makeover, one way or another.

It’s been almost a decade since the Carolinas HealthCare System deployed a patient-matching biometric program that uses palm vein scanning and the health care provider has experienced great success with the modality. The health care provider reports a 70% reduction in check-in time, and 99.9% of its patients are correctly matched to their electronic health records.

The Nymi band has received a lot of attention since it was first announced three-years ago. The wearable, biometric band uses an individual’s electro cardiogram for authentication and then transmits the credential using NFC or BLE for physical or logical access.

Phil Dumas went on ABC’s Shark Tank to get funding for Unikey, his company that focuses on the user experience with mobile physical access control. Unikey has been focused on the residential market but is starting to expand into the commercial arena.
