GuestLogix Inc., a provider of onboard retail solutions to the airline industry, announced the availability of contactless payment technology with its point-of-service handhelds, certified for use with MasterCard PayPass, VISA payWare, American Express ExpressWay, Discover Network Zip and existing Near Field Communications programs residing on mobile phones.
The company’s move with contactless and near field communications technology opens the door to faster payments onboard. Flight attendants will be able to process sales in two-thirds less time versus traditional handling.
Given that airlines have a very limited sales window, increasing transaction throughput is important to increasing in-flight sales. GuestLogix estimates that enabling airline operators to become contactless merchants would result in a 73% reduction in average processing time. This could result in a 272% increase in onboard sales processing capacity.
GuestLogix offers two POS handhelds with contactless support. Its first generation OnBoard PowerSeller utilizes a new hardware add-on reader using an existing communications port. Its second generation PCI PED 2.0 compliant OnBoard PowerSeller 2 with PIN Pad incorporates the antenna and reader behind a touch screen. Both devices include compact and light readers (less than 100 grams) that support all layers of the ISO 14443 Type A & B communications scheme.
The handheld POS devices work seamlessly with the GuestLogix onboard transaction platform which is also PCI-DSS certified and supports transaction clearing on a store-and-forward, or on a real-time basis where air to ground communications is available.
