Air France pilots NFC-based mobile boarding passes
Air France has become the first airline to trial NFC-compliant mobile phone-based boarding passes. Only members of the airline’s frequent-flyer program and just those traveling between Nice and Paris Orly airports are part of the six-month pilot. Passengers can simply swipe their phones over a reader after checking in, and the system will load an electronic boarding pass on to the device, as well as crediting any loyalty bonuses.
At the security checkpoint, a second reader enables airport staff to verify the boarding pass, and a final reader completes the last check at the boarding gate. This “Pass and Fly” system was developed in a partnership between Nice Côte d’Azur Airport and Air France along with Amadeus, a travel network, and IER, a supplier of ticket printers and gate readers.
