In honor of World Password Day 2018, a new survey demonstrates that consumers need significantly more education when it comes to the most important issues involved with keeping data secure.

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, G+D Mobile Security and Samsung showcased a banking authentication product that relies on biometrics instead of passwords. The technology also meets the revised digital payments standards under the new European Payment Services Directive, or PSD2.

The dual interface cards, usable at existing payment terminals in the country, feature fingerprint authentication and no limits on battery life and transactions. Customers soon could be able to enroll in the program via self-service.

The West African country has ambitious plans for its digital ID project, which citizens can use to access online government services, digitally sign documents and travel to neighboring countries. In time, Ghana also plans to enable financial transactions via the cards.

The tiny island in the Indian Ocean has started to deploy a national ID card that also functions as a driver’s license, and a bank, health and insurance, payment and passport card. The project comes as other countries in Africa and Asia move forward with multi-application IDs.

Already known for its efforts at digital ID and online access to government services, the Baltic nation is considering a plan that would give e-residents the use of a digital currency called estcoin. The project could include raising capital via virtual money instead of traditional shares.

The decades-old technology is holding its own even as secure authentication relies more on biometrics and digital methods of ID. In spite of the newer tech, holograms are appearing on more passports and appear poised to command a place in the emerging mobile ID world.
