Japan’s Dai Nippon Printing Co. and the Identive Group have teamed up to develop a new reader designed to handle any type of electronic identity credentials used in Japan.
Built with banks and retailers in mind, the NDI711 reader supports NFC-enabled phones, including those using the Osaifu-Keitai Mobile Wallet, along with Type A/Type B contactless smart cards, traditional contact smart cards, as well as any of Japan’s millions of other FeliCa based devices.
Some 20,000 units of the NDI711 have already been picked up by a major mobile phone retailer for installation in its stores across Japan. In addition to verifying customers’ IDs when they sign up for their mobile phones, the readers are also being used at the customer service counter to validate customers for after-sales services such as phone repairs.
According to the partners, these processes used to require several different card reading devices, along with the manual completion of hard copy files. The NDI711 allows these tasks to be consolidated to one compact device.
