During a hearing with U.S. senators, biometric exit gained a boost when a customs official said the security technology could be deployed in all major U.S. airports within four years. Already, officials have tested biometric exit systems in large airports, and have installed facial recognition technology at major border crossings.

The West African country has ambitious plans for its digital ID project, which citizens can use to access online government services, digitally sign documents and travel to neighboring countries. In time, Ghana also plans to enable financial transactions via the cards.

Digital identity company IDEMIA, along with Royal Caribbean Cruises and U.S. customs officials, recently tested a biometric authentication system designed to move passengers through border checkpoints in less time than via manual checks. So far, results are promising, with another test planned for next year—and possible enhancements to follow.
